Arto, go to www.blackdown.org and get their ppc java port. The one I just installed is j2re-1.3.1-02b-FCS-linux-ppc (make sure you get the ppc one). Also download the install instructions. They are very clear and give keystoke by keystroke installation instructions for both the java and the mozilla plugin. I don't know whether it was necessary, but I uninstalled Kaffe before installing the blackdown version. I have the same machine (DP450) and no, the SMP kernel didn't get installed by default but running the RPM sets everything up and adds the required info to your yaboot.conf. Next time you boot, it will be one of the kernel options. Once you are sure it works OK, just edit yaboot.conf to make it the default. I have experienced no issues (not of my own making :-)) with this kernel. You know you are using it because you get two Mandrake Stars at the top of the screen when it starts to boot. Odd you should mention the complaint about sound. The first time I ran this kernel I got an error (not fatal) about snd-wavefront(?), but it never appeared again on subsequent boots so I figured it was a fluke. sharon
