It seems that auth is the default when you have a gateway specified, which I do because I usually connect to my ISP through a router on my network. I suppose the solution is to disable the gateway through some scripting when I want to use kpp and re-enable it when I stop ppp. Although I followed the suggestions in the deja news post, I still get the char-major-108 not found error message and now get an alarm message from chat and a connection failed message.
