Very simple. Boot the system with tombsomething...
mount /dev/hda1 with rw option and try to execute some program.
e.g.

./mnt/disk/sbin/defrag ( don't remember where defrag is installed )

The file is simply not executable, I can "chmod 755", I can enable every
permission on this file but the system cannot execute it because the file seems
to remain not executable.

In the past I have used some minilinux as rescue diskette but the files can be
executable without any addictional action.
