A statically linked program is one that has all the bits its needs 
from a given library inside itself.
It is bigger, but on the other side it doesn't requires a library
to be present.

All distributions based on rpm as their main packaging tool ship rpm
in static version. I suppose Debian does the same with its packaging tool,
and Slacwkare should have statics tar and gzip.
