try replacing

        daemon --check xfs su xfs -c \"xfs -port -1 -daemon\" -s /bin/sh
by
        daemon --check xfs xfs -port -1 -daemon

if it works better with this, it means you have owner problems (eg:
/tmp/.font-unix should be owned by xfs)
