The c (MD4 checksum both ends) option slows it down inordinately and
puts an inexcusable load on the server.

Why the z option?   The servers explicitly request that you don't
load them up like that!  With telco modems, the negotiated link will
compress and uncompress the data anyway.   With cable modems (they
currently do not compress), transport is fast enough anyway.
