the z is configurable on the server, if there is a competent admin on the 
mirror, which we KNOW is this case, their rsyncd.conf, will explicitly 
dissallow compression on files that do not require/not needed.

The c option only takes a while longer, but as I said, without the c option, 
the server was assuming that my mirror was complete, it found about 30 files 
in the installation tree that were different.

and besides, modem-modem compression is not what we are talking about here.
