I downloaded the latest Mandrake 7.1 beta installation tree and ran an
install from my hard drive. The good news (!!) is that my Promise Ultra66
controller was found during the install. And the new graphical install is
quite good.
Now the not-so-good news. I attempted to install LILO to /dev/hde (the
master HD on my Promise controller). The install seemed to go OK (no error
messages). However, when I rebooted my PC, the LILO prompt began to display
but stopped cold after display LI. At this point, my PC was locked up. I
had no other choice but to boot from my Windows 98 boot diskette and run
fdisk /mbr to restore the MBR.
My question is: where/how should I install LILO so that it works with the
master HD on my Promise controller. This HD (/dev/hde) has the following on
it:
Primary Partition #1 (Drive C:, FAT32)
Windows 2000 Server boot files (boot.ini, that sort of thing)
Windows 98
Primary Partition #2 (Drive I:, NTFS)
Windows 2000 Server
Primary Partition #3 (/, ext2)
Root partition for Mandake 7.1
Extended Partition with 2 logical FAT32 drives
My 2nd hard drive (/dev/hda) is connected to the on-board IDE controller.
It has the following:
Extended Partition with 1 logical FAT32 drive
Primary Partition (ext2)
Linux swap for Mandrake 7.1
Primary Partition (ext2)
/var for Mandrake 7.1
Primary Partition (ext2)
/tmp for Mandrake 7.1
