1) It was going to let me install apache w/out apache-common, even though it's a required package
It depends: it requires either apache-common or apache2-common. The latter is automatically installed if you selected the "Web/FTP" section.
So apache1 can work with just apache2-common?
Yes, it is only symlinks, directories and support files.
4) It wouldn't let me deslect the package mod_php, even though I had apache2-mod_php selected, which provides everything that was required by other selected packages.
I cannot duplicate this here. Was this an install or an upgrade? If it's an upgrade, you might have some package that required a specific version of mod_php (some Contrib packages did that in 9.0).
Fresh install. I think it's an installer bug, and probably the same bug that wouldn't let me deselect mdkkdm.
Wait a second... if you tried to install apache1, and some php script that requires mod_php, it looks like the installer kind of "locks" mod_php, even if you install apache2-mod_php after.
No, I deselected all of the apache1 stuff.
But this is not a problem, since you can install both apache versions and both mod_php versions in parallel, and switch from one version of apache to the other by the commands "advxrun1.3" or "advxrun2.0".

Yeah, I must admit your work is pretty sweet.
