Currently (due to historical reasons) the translations are taken in the locale default encoding, then converted to utf-8 for KDE and Gnome, in order to avoid converting what is already in utf-8, the strigns are checked to see if they are valid utf-8, if yes, they are not converted. THis obvioulsy doesn't work for strings that are both utf-8 and local encoding valid byte sequences. In order to solve another bug, in menudrake (bug #2270), the way it is handled will be changed, translations will be retrieved in utf-8 always, and only converted to locale encoding when needed (not for KDE, Gnome nor ROX; on,ly for WM, icewm, etc), and as the source encoding is always known to be utf-8, no conversion surprises will happen.
