Evolution IMAP support is really not optimal.. It is not great in 1.4 but
it was worse in 1.2.. Evo 1.4.4 should be released next week with another
set of fixes (I don't remember if there is IMAP fixes in it).. 

It is known from Evolution developers but 1.4 was only a GNOME2 port of
Evolution and they didn't had time to rewrite IMAP backend.. It will be
done for next major release of Evolution.
