Ok, I suppose the reason is in /usr/share/doc/esound-0.2.30/ChangeLog where it
says "Allow esound to read esd.conf whether it is to autospawn or not.".

So I changed the line in /etc/esd.conf from

        spawn_options=-terminate -nobeeps -as 2

to

        spawn_options=-terminate -as 2

and now "esd" makes startup beeps.

It so happens that "esd" is a very simple 3-letter command to test if sound is
working fine. So why not change the line (in esd.conf) to

        spawn_options=-terminate -as 2

? Since esd making sound at startup was not a problem in the past, it should
not be a problem now.

description:
I run a mixer program (aumix) and confirm that xmms (using OSS sound output
plugin) gives sound just fine. However the "esd" command gives no sound. There
was no such problem in LM9.1 or LM9.2beta1.
