Hi!

Yesterday "moderated" a test install of RC1 on a friend's computer (he
is a Windows advanced, but a Linux novice) to verify whether some
problems he had with 9.1 still exist (they never occured on my
computer).

The good news is, the old problems network cards seem already fixed.

I wondered about the X11 test screen. It was simply grey with the
dialog asking whether it is okay. My friend complained that he could
not judge whether it was okay, because it had only a plain color. He
expected some test image or such (his flat panel has the misfeature of
sometimes shifting part of the screen out of the display).

So... if it isn't already planned, can we have some test image? Even
if it consist only of some simple lines and colors, so that one can
judge whether the whole screen is shown and has correct properties?

The other thing was autologin. Personally, I think the feature is
evil. ;-) Regardless, the install programm asked whether my friend
wanted autologin to be activated (I am not sure anymore, if the box
was activated by default or not) and although he is someone who has
passwords on everything, he chose autologin, because he got the
impression that this was what the installer suggested (and he always
did go with the defaults when he was uncertain, in order to avoid
mistakes).

So... if we must have such a feature, can it be reworded in a way that
it is less suggestive in the false way. I.e. someone without strong
preference should be motivated to disable it, not the other way
around.

Another thing, he wanted his surround sound, and I found no way to get
even started with it. Don't hurt me - I did a lot of search, but only
found some commercial drivers (e.g. xmms, but he wanted it for xine).
So this is not a support request, but more of a feature request (or
alternatively, a request for smacking me for my ignorance).

Hm. I think I was not very clear. Let's try again. If there is just
some HOWTO I need to read about surround sound, just tell me so, and I
am away in a sec searching again. But if not - and that was my
impression from the search I have done - my question is, what is the
current state and is it feasible for Mandrake to try to include
support for it (not for 9.2, of course). Austin, maybe you know more
about that?

Bye,

        Benjamin.

PS: I know I was too unspecific about hardware info. I can only get it
when I visit my friend. So, if you need to know anything, let me
know, and I will look it up when I am next time at his house.
