I can imagine two ways : 
With gd library ( http://www.boutell.com/gd/ )
It is possible to generate the exact pattern with the exact size (png).
With ImageMagick 
It is possible to resize a single pattern to the right size.

To avoid to waste some place in the CD, it is possible to generate a test 
image with patterns only when needed.
It is possible also to generate images for each size given in arguments.

I can write such a generator with libgd2 if you want.
