I downloaded all packages except for the pilot and devel ones from
http://people.mandrakesoft.com/~fcrozat/evolution and did
'rpm --force -Uvh *.rpm' and the rest of what you said. I am now happy to report
that I can't reproduce the bug.

Evolution will chrash if you click the 'x' on the windowborder before it has
completed startup. I'm told that the window 'evolution' is not responding, and I
choose to force it to exit. If you do this evolution will show up as sleeping in
the task manager and you can't start another instance of evolution before you
have killed the rest of what's left of the old.
