<OPINION type="personal experience">
That doesn't mean they're gone, though. There hasn't been a place I've
worked in the past few years that hasn't used them heavily. That also
doesn't include small computer shops that deal in used equipment and
such. Finding the software configurable NICs is not nearly as hard as
you've made it out to be.
