I had the same problem installing a completely different, rather big
package, I do not remember what package, but it filled up a system
partition nearly completely (and some cron job gave the rest) and
therefore the font server "xfs" didn't start any more and so X didn't
start due to lack of "fixed font". Seems that "xfs" needs at least a
little bit of temporary disk space.
