this much I know (from /etc/protocols) but the real question is "what
did we add in Mandrake 7.1 which was not present in 7.0 and generates
these strange pings?"
Actually, the problem may not be totally new: All my prior Mandrake
upgrades were based on Red Hat 4.2/6.0 cruft, so my previous Mandrake
installs would have only replaced RPMs already installed. This time,
just for a weekend of fun ;) I bought a new drive and installed on
bare media with an objective to only move across what I actually use
from the old disk.
the igmp packet is just one surprise. Another was the sudden shift
to postfix as the default mailer where the default install is not
particularly friendly to dialup use.
