Well, I had a chance to try the new (or yesterday's new, he, he) kernel packages, and I
have good and bad news:
kernel-2.2.17-0.21mdk - Did not work. Same problem, hang during partition check.
hackkernel-2.4.0-0.14mdk - This one did work!! But apparently there is a little bit
more
overhead, since a two disk (both are UDMA33; the UDMA66 drive measured ~15 - 17 MB/s)
stripe measured with hdparm gave me ~17.5 - 18.5 MB/s, while 2.2.16 gave me 19.3 - 19.8
MB/s
I was going to keep working with hackkernel, but there seems to be a bug that prevents
the ppp daemon to add the default route; so for convenience I had to go back to 2.2.16
