It worked with my AWE32.  It didn't work out of the install directly, I
had to run soundconfig or whatever it is called, and then it worked
fine.

I do agree with your point as to the importance of not breaking
functionality that used to work.  I know I had problems with Redhat 6.0
and 6.1 not recognizing a Matrox Millenium card in its install, while it
did in 5.2, which was very frustrating.
