Isn't the PCI id of the particular card just the PCI
id of the PCI controller/tuner chip (IOW the bt8xx)?
Also, how do you intend to uniquely identify individual cards?
The last I checked, something like a WinTV 401 that would just
show up as a bt878 card sans fm tuner. So you wouldn't necessarily
know to set radio=1 (or whatever the procedure is these days for
enabling radio support) for the module load of bttv.
As far as the PCI ID's themselves, you should just be able to get
them out of the kernel headers.

Woohoo!

What problem was that? Panicking without the defaults file being
properly loaded?

You wouldn't happen to know if
a) xawtv works with the current version of XFree4
b) xawtv fullscreen mode works right in the current
version.
The lastest xawtv that I have installed doesn't do fullscreen
mode right. Although Reel Deal slots has no problems with
mode switches.
(Then again, the SMAC and SC3K demos all put my monitor in
DPMS suspend mode whenever they try to go to fullscreen mode)
.xawtv (US, Las Vegas)

[global]
fullscreen = 640 x 480
freqtab = us-cable
pixsize = 64x48
jpeg-quality = 75
[defaults]
norm = NTSC
capture = over
source = Television
[NBC Vegas]
channel = 3
norm = NTSC
[VCR]

...and another thing, are you going to have full USB HID support
(including hubs) available for the installer for the release
version of 7.2? The Mandrake graphical installer just isn't very
suited for keyboard navigation...
