I think that encouraging hardware manufacturers to release drivers or at least
share enough information for one of us to write a driver is far more productive
than simply throwing blame.

Vote with your feet, use something else - if you have the choice. And write a
*polite* email to the proprietary people telling them that you chose a
competitor and why you did, and inviting them to lift their game so that you can
buy their products in future.
