Beware ! This may not be a problem with X. Check first, by using xev that X is
seeing anything from the mouse wheel at all. Some motherboards, including mine,
seem to send signals that X doesn't even see, let alone process, for the
wheel. The wheel on my Logitech mouse works fine through the serial adaptor,
but xev reports absolutely no input at all when it is used via the PS/2 port.
I have reported this many times to the various X mail lists, and even submitted
it as an X bug report, but as yet it hasn't even been acknowledged, let alone
fixed !!
