I agree that he probably does have a winmodem, but I take issue with
your "WinModem checklist". How is it that any of these first four items

mean you have a winmodem? There is no relationship between PCI and
winmodems. There is nothing stopping a "real modem" manufacturer from
making a PCI modem. The lack of jumpers is related to it being a PCI
card, not a winmodem. What's the size of actual card got to do with
what kind of modem it is? That is just more indicitive of the
integration of the technology on the chip. And the only modems that
ever come with computers are winmodems? There is nothing stopping a
computer maker/seller from putting "real" modems into a computer.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1 as to PCI as far as i know most PCI modems are winmodems but yes PCI
Real modems are made
2 the no jumpers thing is ISA only (most isa cards without jumpers are
winmodems)
3 size and number of chips on the board is a fair rule of thumb (simple
design limitations)
4 most retail systems use Winmodems ( even IBM mostly sold Winmodems)

the stongest "proof" of a modem being a winmodem is running a kernel.org
2.4.0 kernel.
If the modem is not picked up as a serial port in the dmesg output it is
either
1 dead
2 a winmodem
