I guess I'll have to wait 'til kernel 2.4.x is stable :(

define stable 2.4.0-test10 (the kernel.org version) is maybe the last
test version
(as per LINUS)
it takes me on a dialup connection and a P75 only about three hours to
do a kernel
so ....
