I'm sorry I can't help with your X problems but ...

Sure it can be installed, they do have some kind of support for GNU/Linux
but it's not terribly visible (a.k.a the ccc compiler for Alpha ...)

Actually I also own an old Compaq ..I got LM to install on a Prolinea 466
(i486) with (nearly) stock LM, only the kernel need recompilation.
 
It used to have Windows, and it wasn't mine, so what I'm basically doing is
pretty much voiding my warranty and support since they give no support
if you do something drastic to your system (AFAIK).
