Hello everyone, I'm a newcomer to Linux Mandrake (I'm a WinNT Server Admin
at a small college and I am the one who gets to plan future transitions...
Linux is a definite possibility).
I encountered several installation problems with version 7.2 (download
ISO's). I could not setup networking in the installation routine (though
Kudzu found it later : AMD PCnet), nor could I get Lilo or Grub to write the
MBR so that Linux could boot after installation, nor could I make a
boot-disk.
This was frustrating, but I said I am a WinNT server admin... I know
frustrating. The solution to the problem was to install a minimal
installation of 7.1, then do an expert upgrade to 7.2. In the upgrade
installation I was allowed to finally edit Grub for loading and can boot
into 7.2 kernel. Guess what? I start the boot process in the 7.2 standard
kernel and wham a black screen with no text (only the dead red pixel). So I
repeat the above (3 hours of installation later) and during installation
disable every possible startup service in the hopes that it was the problem.
It appears to be the solution.
I hope this is not indicative of everyone's experience, can I do anything
further to help squish whatever problems there were (especially if they were
me).
