I do not know if there is a standard way to guess the mask from the IP address.
But for the mails I have seen, there is not. One other example. In may home
DHCP setup I have a 212.97.x.x address and a 255.255.252.0 mask. This can
happen on other setups also if the net admin is short of subzones.
So a good procedure (from my point of view)
would be to let the user fill the IP address, you guess a mask (in my case
it would be 255.255.255.0 or 255.255.0.0, depending on the guess method), the
cursor places automatically at the end of the mask, and I correct the last
fields.
Perhaps one other method (I don't know if it is extended in linux world), is
what old TCP soft used in MacOS. The user could choose from a Class A, B,
C or D of network (that roughly corresponded to the number of fields in the
mask filled with 255), and 'fine tune' the rest ( in my case, class C, and
correct the third field).
Just thinking aloud...
