I guess any video player running under XFree86 needs Xv (XVideo extension)
In XF 4.0.1, it was only implemenetd for Matrox (G400 ?)
XF 4.0.3 has Xv for TDFX, ATI Radeon and Rage 128.
Nvidia has Xv in their closed -sourced driver as well.
I am afraid that's all the choice at a moment.
ATI Mach64 support for Xv is planned for XF 4.1.0 (so you can try XF 4.1 CVS
branch to test)
