I have the same problem but under Gnome. Soundblaster 32 PNP (old ISA
card, so I didn't really consider it a big deal but my problem sounds
similar). In Control Center->Multimedia->Sound, I click off the "Enable
sound server startup" and "Sounds for events", click Ok, go back to it
and they are unchecked. I have no sound, period, from any program, but
HardDrake lists the sound card.
