Yes, I have recognized a nead for *different* KDE _interface_ (look'n'feel).
NOTE: Look'n'Feel, not internal architecture !
I have made some themes for KDE 2.1. If you have tried SawFish or IceWm
themes - I can tell you that the same themes are almost done for KDE 2.x.
Unfortunately, I found some bugs in Kwin and KThemeManager which do not allow
me immediately wipe out IceWM, SawFish & Co. from hard disk.
It looks like to me at a moment that there are 2 solutions:
-- either patch KWin and KThemeManager
I do not know KDE internals to do it
-- to write new WindowManager which will be able to replace KWin.
(and, probably, SawFish for Gnome)

I like second approach, because it's not normal when you have in KDM 11
(elleven) WindowManagers (and for some reason - no entry for KWin? SuSE has
Kwin in KDM !), and half of them uses GTK, the rest - Imlib or pure X.
And no QT-based WM, or just another WM capable to work with KDE.

BTW: I encourage everybody to look at QLWM - window manager which is based on
QT 2.2, instead of GTK. According to author, works very well on 486/33
computer :-))

Just 4100 lines of code, around 30sec to compile on my machine.
That's the way software should be written, IMHO.
