Have you looked at XNview? It is available for Linux as well. There are
binaries for OpenMotif and lesstif. Lesstif version runs with coker
lesstif O.K.; I have not tried it with 2000 files, but it is known as free
alternative to ACDSee on Windows.

It has problems with russian filenames (of course) but you porbably do not
