Hi Juan,
Yes, I had the onboard IDE disabled in the BIOS. I have now re-enabled it,
changed fstab to hd{e,f,g} and added the important line to lilo:
disk=/dev/hde bios=0x80
Now it works as expected -- thanks fot the tip
