An ancient computing term for code which does stuff outside its realm of
responsibility...  for instance, I can understand why CUPS messes with
/etc/hosts' localhost configuration line; but it would make more sense to have a
scheme where the networking code is responsible for /etc/hosts. [At least, Till
fixed it to *only* change that line instead of overwriting the entire file as
8.1 CUPS does now...]

Kinda like if I wrote a Tax program which, as a side-effect, changed your X
modeline... 

Makes for very unstable, unreliable, and unsupportable systems...  gee...  I
just described Winders...  :^)
