No, I simply subscribed to the cooker mailing list. No
username/password needed.

If this is true, then I understand the need for it. But it seems
like there's a better way.

Hmm... I don't know what you're talking about here, I didn't go
that far into it. Maybe I should have spent just a little more time on
it. If the page had said, "We require a username / login because we were
getting too much spam" I would have been willing to put more time into it.
