I had originally compiled 2.4.17-20mdk using CONFIG_MPENTIUMIII=y. While using that kernel, I would boot up to a situation where the ram was practically used up after bootup (512mg), I then had X crash twice because ram and swap (another 518mg) were completely at their limits.
