I had something similar happening here, My has a Pentium-IV 1.4 128 RAM and
512 Swap, after a few hours running exausted all RAM ab=nd swap and just
crashed X, re-iniciate the X-server and it remains ruuning a few more hours
again.

What I found was consuming resources, was That I had been using the multiple
wallpaper as background, (I had a collection of nice looking females)
after using the default background for several days the behavior has improved.
It stopped crashing on me, and swap also stopped growing.

So, in my case the problems was related to KDE, and not the kernel.

I have a normal system again, (But I missed the Pics of those girls!) ;-)
