  It tells me the device does not exist if I try to redetect it in Harddrake.

  It seems to work fine with the OSS driver, which I tried just now. The only 
problems I can see, is once again it appears switching to OSS causes a loss 
of midi synth (notice the synth device loaded above). IMO, I personally would 
recommend fixing the ALSA setup that it presently defaults to (and also did 
in 8.1) by having Harddrake add the lines for OSS-Emu, rather than switching 
to a more limited driver.
