I have tested using a number of XF86Config-4 files. The problem is not
there.

Using XFdrake, I changed to a non-accellerated 4.2.0 X. Same problem.

Using XFdrake, I changed to a 3.3.6 X. Came up perfectly!

Ran xf86config which seemed to output a new XF86Config (not -4).

So now I have a usable 8.2 on this machine, with X running in a
limp-along mode.

This does seem to point the finger at X 4.2.0 as being a regression for
this particular video card, although it runs OK with Mandrake 8.0.

Still no response from the X developers at MIT.
