Thinking more about it, I guess it is the problem of custom fonts. KDE2 and KDE3 have totally different font management, in particular, KDE3 is using different font names. So when you select font in KDE3 it cannot be (always) used in KDE2. As long as you do not try to customize fonts it may even work. > > Ah!
