You may not care if you have to rebuild your /root everytime you install
a new distro but I hate having to do unnecessary work... when the distros
leave my /root alone, I'll consider not putting it in /home/root.
I also use multiple sets of partitions so that I have access to my
previous /var (DNS), /etc (postfix, apache, etc) stuff so that I don't
have to resort to backups which are slower than mounting the old distro's
files to restore my configs...
I still look forward to the day I can install onto another set of
partitions *while* running the current distro; only a quick reboot...
