Perhaps it should.  Perhaps I am just not loading the right alsa
modules for the OSS mixer shim.

Maybe it is, but it should not be used by any Mandrake packages.  I
won't argue that OSS compatibility should be maintained.  It should
just not be used by any of the Mandrake packaged software.  It should
all use the Alsa interface.

This should be reason enough to use it.  The difference in the
controls between the Alsa mixers (alsamixer, gamix) and the OSS mixers
is astounding!  I never knew my soundcard had so many switches and
controls until I tried using a native Alsa interface mixer on it.
