It works if i disable it only for the incriminated drive (hdc for me).

I'll use this kernel with DMA disabled and check wether it works like this.
With 2.4.3 it was rock solid.
I'll let you know with 2.4.18.

btw, this problem should be taken into account for cooker kernels if it is a 
2.4.18 problem or optimization one.
