Instead of wondering what should be the default driver, the best solution would be to offer the possibility to change and try another driver if available. (not only for soundcard)
So install one by default, and in the soundcard configuration in hardrake, let the user chose its driver, and give him advices on how to use it. Because it is true that the Alsa driver has more features than OSS for sblive!. With alsa I can now plug my midi keyboard, and link the midi input directly to the hardware synth that uses custom soundfonts loaded into RAM. This means no CPU used, no timidity, and very good midi quality. This increases the pleasure to use very good tools like smurf, brahms, and others. More generally, the driver management is often a pain and offers almost no choice. When going into hardrake for a particular device, you expect to see information about the driver, its version, and even a way to change it; but there is nothing. I often get questions from windows users, asking why we cannot easily change a driver if a new one is available. (either kernel driver or XFree driver). It is even worse for someone coming from BeOS, where installing a driver just meant putting a file in a directory. Are we obliged to wait for the hurd and directFB ?
