You can download the sources at ID which contain a GPL license. Doesn't
it apply for the name as well ? If it doesn't, ID would have renamed
those sources, I suppose.

As far as I can tell, the name of the project is quake2. I tried
subscribing to the mailing list, to propose another name, but I get no
replies on my subscription-requests.
