MandrakeUpdate simply does not work for me on 9.0; this is on a new,
freshly installed ThinkPad -- installed 8.2 and used new 9.0 upgrade
procedure. Using ethereal, I can see MU grab the list of mirrors; then it
reports a failure, yet it does not even send a single packet on the
network...

Trying to issue the command (from MU Log) manually gives:

# /usr/sbin/urpmi.addmedia --update update_source
ftp://ftp.stealth.net/pub/mirrors/ftp.mandrake
.com/Mandrake/updates/9.0/RPMS/ with ../base/hdlist.cz
unable to take medium "Updates for Mandrake Linux 8.2 (ftp1u)" into
account as no list file [/var/lib/urpmi/list.Updates for Mandrake Linux
8.2 (ftp1u)] exists
medium "update_source" already exists

SSM only shows the first 3 entries selected (CD[1-3])

I've ftp'ed most of the 9.0 updates and manually installed them; so there
is no problem with my networking.
