I know some poeple start a project to make Mandrake 9.0 specific for athlon.
It is lot of works, and there are allready too many works on i586 to do this, 
IMHO.

But, What do you think to make availlable only more important packages 
availlable for athlon or i686, as mandrake do for their kernel.
I think to kernel, glibc (allready tunning by pluggin), database server, gcc, 
mplayer... I don't think building bash or fileutils for athlon will change 
lot of things.

I think this works can be made by contributors (rpm --rebuild) who is 
interest, this does not break current cooker distro.

Of course using those packages can be clearly unsupported.

I think urpmi can deal and choose better package.

I only put idea here... I want your point of view.
If this idea sound like good for some poeple, maybe we can create a 
cooker/athlon and contrib/athlon on mirror.
