Actually, it's worse, since Scannerdrake says "Your scanner has been successfully setup" or something like that, which just isn't true. Minimum should be a notice that the scanner requires firmware, noting that it should be on the driver CD, and telling you which file to edit. But by then you could have made a UI for selecting the firmware file, and copying it into /etc/sane.d or something (so it's safe).
