I did exactly this and it works fine. Except of the issue with glibc/binutils 
which I reported and glitches in the KDE, which are known already and do not 
seem to have anything with the upgrade process. 

The only thing I do not have the "latest and greatest" is the kernel, because 
my machine needs some special tweaks (high memory support, SMP and such) and 
I do not want to recompile the kernel all the time.
