This seems to be a kernel bug. If you revert to kernel 2.4.19 it works fine. 
Other things to try: in the KDE Sound Server config dialog, try putting the 
buffer size at minimum in the Audio Input/Output tab, or selecting 8-bit for 
sound quality. That should make it work, though you'll get very choppy audio 
when switching screens or even just using scrollbars.

As I said, using kernel 2.4.19 (which is what I'm doing now) solves the 
problem.
